The museum is located on a site where the city walls and fortifications of the city of Venlo used to be. After these were demolished in 1870, the site was used as a shunting yard for private railway companies, which maintained an important international connection via Venlo. On the side of the station is also the oldest preserved gas station in the Netherlands.
This Esso gas station was built in 1933 and has housed various organisations and companies since the 1970s. The history of the site has been an important source of inspiration for architect Jeanne Dekkers in the realisation of her design for the museum.
